Every black belt once tied their first white belt. Start your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey with us at FlowHouse Dania Beach .

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can feel exciting — and maybe a little intimidating — but your first class at FlowHouse Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Dania Beach will be all about learning, moving, and having fun in a safe, welcoming environment. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, confidence, or simply trying something new, here’s what you can expect when you step on the mats for the first time.

1. A Warm Welcome — No Experience Needed

You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or have any martial-arts background to begin. When you arrive, our team will greet you, introduce you to your instructor, and walk you through the space — including where to change, leave your belongings, and find your training partners.

We know that first-class nerves are normal! Everyone in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu remembers their own first day, and our community is known for being supportive and respectful. Expect plenty of smiles, handshakes, and guidance from both coaches and teammates.

2. What to Wear and Bring

If you’re coming for a Gi class, we’ll provide a loaner uniform for your intro session (a lightweight jacket and pants). If it’s a No-Gi class, just wear comfortable athletic clothing like a T-shirt or rashguard and shorts without zippers.

Bring a water bottle, a small towel, and flip-flops or slides to wear when you’re off the mats — keeping the mats clean is a big deal in Jiu-Jitsu culture.

Pro tip: Arrive about 10–15 minutes early so we can help you get fitted with a uniform and sign the quick waiver before class begins.

3. The Class Structure

Your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class will usually follow this flow:

  1. Warm-up (10 minutes): light movements, balance drills, and coordination exercises.
  2. Technique (20–25 minutes): the instructor demonstrates 1–2 beginner-friendly positions or escapes, and you’ll practice with a partner.
  3. Drills or situational training (10–15 minutes): short rounds to help you apply what you just learned.
  4. Cool-down & questions (5 minutes): a few stretches and time for feedback or photos!

Don’t worry — there’s no “fighting” or full sparring in your intro class. You’ll focus on understanding how the techniques work safely and effectively.

4. Learning the Culture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about physical skill — it’s about respect, discipline, and teamwork. You’ll learn to bow before stepping on the mats, shake hands with your partner before training, and thank them after.

You’ll quickly notice the calm, focused energy on the mat. Coaches often remind students to “leave the ego at the door.” The goal is progress, not perfection. Every class builds your confidence little by little.

5. What You’ll Feel After

Expect to sweat, smile, and maybe even surprise yourself with how much you can do! Many beginners say they feel more grounded and clear-minded after class.

You might also feel sore in muscles you didn’t know existed — that’s normal! Drink water, stretch, and rest well. Within a few sessions, you’ll start noticing better posture, improved balance, and a sense of belonging in the FlowHouse Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu family.

6. Your Next Step

After your intro class, we’ll help you pick the best program for your goals — whether it’s:

  • Adult Fundamentals: Build a solid foundation of movement and defense.
  • Kids & Teens Programs: Focused on confidence, coordination, and discipline.
  • Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Supportive, empowering, and technique-driven.

We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
